Surf Film Festival Film Programme
18 – 21 May 2017. For more details click the link at the bottom.
The points have been updated after the latest contest for May 2017. There was a couple of glitches with the excel format not calculating but hopefully it’s all rectified.
Finally, we have had the ocean kick in with some long-awaited waves for the Sunny coast. The PA & MA Bendall saw some of the best waves we had ever had for this comp. It was another huge weekend for the Club, and as always, the club members got together to run one of the best amateur run Surfing Contest in Australia.
Windansea Surf Club would like to thank all our Sponsors that supported this event, without them getting behind the PA we would not be able to run it at the high standard that it deserves.
There’s a lot of photos that were taken by both professional and non-pro photogs that we are sorting through to make available to everyone so stay tuned.
THANK YOU ALL THE SPONSORS.
Also, a thank-you to Sunshine Coast Council and Cr Tim Dwyer for the connection of onsite power to Moffat Beach.
Well done to all club members who competed as well, with strong results in all divisions. The conditions really turned on for Finals day with the standard of surfing thru the roof. Having Jet ski support for competitors was also very popular. Ben & Wade put in a huge effort over the long weekend, well done guys.
The addition of the Old Mal Surfing pairs was also popular and we may look at adding their division into the comp format next year.
Thanks to all Club Members who helped set up and clean up over the weekend, also was very pleasing to see all the Grommets do an Emu parade late on Sunday arvo picking up all the
rubbish and leaving Moffs just how we found it. CLEAN.
WINDANSEA COMMUNITY SURF FACILITY.
Last Week Sunshine Coast Regional Council voted in favour of our application for a Community Surf based Building to be located at the end of Buderim St ( Ann St ). Currimundi. Cr Tim Dwyer & Cr Peter Cox moved to have it presented to the other councillors, obtaining a vote of 8 to 3 for the building, even the Mayor voted in favour. Next step is State Government approval (fingers crossed.).
I would also like to mention that the support we have had from the Caloundra Mal Club and Disabled Surfers was a huge factor in Council supporting this proposal. Caloundra Mal Club President John Thurtell & Roger Todd are also members of the Building Committee and there support is greatly appreciated by all of us at Windansea.
Thanks for your time everyone, we have a club meeting tomorrow night Wed 3rd Currimundi Hotel 7pm.
Club comp this weekend, looks like more swell on the way as well.

The annual Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest Hosted by Windansea Surf Club for 2017 will be held over the Easter weekend April 14-16 2017 at Moffat Beach on the Sunshine Coast. The event will attract competitors from all over the country with all types of surfing ability.
In 1974 the inaugural ‘Pa’ Bendall Memorial Contest was organised as a mark of respect for the Charles Ben (Pa) Bendall.
‘Pa’ is the grandad of surfing in Queensland. He and his wife Marjory (Ma) settled in Caloundra in the 1950’s.There were only a handful of other surfers living locally at the time, and Ma & Pa became the mother & father of surfing on the Sunshine Coast.
Pa formed the invitational “Moffateers’ in 1966 as a club to promote integrity and sportsmanship in the sport of surfing. He encouraged the surfing youth of the sunshine coast to maintain their good character by offering them free membership to the club.
Using the club contests as training and conditioning for more challenging contests; Pa encouraged the young Moffateers to compete in regional, state and national championships.
In 1973 Pa passed away and his funeral service was conducted overlooking his beloved Moffat waves and his ashes were scattered from a plane over the water.
In August 1973 a memorial plaque was unveiled; in what is know as the Pa Bendall Park, on Moffat Headland over looking the surf.
The contest is a memorial to Pa’s enthusiasm for surfing and his efforts in promoting the sport and encouraging the young surfers of Caloundra and surfers worldwide.
The first Pa Bendall Memorial contest was held at Moffat Beach on the 2nd and 3rd Of February 1974 in 3- 4 foot surf. First prize was $1500, the largest prise offered for any Australian surfing contest at the time. The competition attracted every professional surfer in the country including Wayne (Rabbit) Bartholomew, Simon Anderson and Hawaiian legend Gerry Lopez as well as hot local talent.
Since its inception the contest has been held for 43 consecutive years (9 as the Ma & Pa Bendall) and has been a spring board for many young surfers moving into the professional ranks with past winners including Australian and World champions and legends. It has also made a significant contribution to the community fabric of Caloundra and helped raise the profile of the region through international publicity created by the contest.
Entries will close on or around April 6th 2017 so get in quick as there are limited spaces. For more info and to enter visit https://www.surfingaustralia.com/states/qld/events/pa-and-ma-bendall-memorial-surfing-contest-1
Hey everyone the website has been updated with all the final points results for 2016 plus the latest points for 2017. We hope to have these updates provided more regularly in the future so everyone can show their sponsors that they were telling the truth.
A “Little Event” for Windansea & Friends on the Sunshine Coast before the “Big Event” on the Gold Coast.
An intimate music session and rehearsal by a local band, “Los Gringos” formed by Paul ‘Gringo’ Anderson and joined by his old 1960’s “Capitol Showband” mate, Robert ‘Stevo’ Stevenson. They are playing at the front bar of ‘The Wharf Tavern’, Mooloolaba, Friday 17th February at 7.30pm.
The band is keen to play for the local WindanSea crew and friends before they play at the Gold Coast as the featured surf culture music band at the 50 Year International WindanSea Reunion with old surfers from the original Californian, Sydney, Surfers Paradise and Sunshine Coast (Caloundra) branches.
If you enjoy their music on the night and would like to go to the Gold Coast in March (2nd-3rd) for the 50 Year WindanSea and Friends Reunion, check out the following link. It will be a one off event and they are expecting a big, big crowd of up to 500!!
Here is a link to the “Big Event”:
Happy New year, Well everyone should be over Xmas now and getting ready to go back to school or work.
Next weekend (Sunday 22nd) we kick off our club year by running a sign on fun day, as part of the day we are hosting the Windansea Single fin comp at Moffat Beach, we will have the bbq going and swell is forecasted as well. This will give some crew the chance to showcase their talents riding old pre 1985 single fin boards. Some people regard these boards as a work of art, some as a lot of fun to ride and some as a piece of crap but whatever your view is as long as your out there having fun that’s what we want to see next weekend, good luck to all that are having a go.
The PA & MA Bendall committee has already had a number of meetings to organise this years event held over the Easter long weekend. If any members have someone in mind that may want to have a stall with food or other surf related merchandise or may want to sponsor the comp, please contact Tim Carter or myself.
Good to see Reef Heazlewood again with another great result at the World Junior Titles held at Kiama N.S.W . Reef finished with a 1/4 final spot, I am sure he wanted a better result after getting runner-up at the last World Titles held at Oceanside U.S.A last year. That’s the way comps go sometimes.
Last weekend was the Burleigh Single fin comp and club member Hayden MacDougall made the semi finals, this was an awesome result for Hayden with a lot of big names competing in the event. Past Windansea member and World Champ Joel Parkinson took out the final held in 3-4ft waves.
The Windansea Surf Club presentations for 2016 will be held on Sunday 5th February after our club comp. Not sure on the venue as it depends on conditions where we are surfing. Our Club Vice Prez Dale Faddy has donated his time to make all our Division trophies. Dale is saving the club a considerable amount of cash as well. Good on ya mate.
Speaking of the Faddys, they are all on a road trip to Narrabeen for Skye, as she is competing in the National Junior Rip Curl Finals. Good luck down there Skye.
Our talented bunch of grommies are showing they are stars of the future with some great results recently.
We had Elijah Magner take out the u/12 Wahu final at Ann st and also Hunter Andersson not only winning Sunny coast comp also winning the u/8 final on the Gold Coast as well. Cam MacDougall finished 2nd u/14 at the Ann st comp and Cale Miller came away with a 4th in the u/8 final as well. These kids are showing so much promise and we all love watching them progress and improve year after year, Well done guys.
With the new year kicking off all members need to pay there membership before the end of January, just go onto Surfing Queensland website same as last year. If you have forgotten password just contact Tim or myself. If you are joining Windansea for the first time, you must be invited to join by a current or past club member. Then you will have to complete 3 months probation attending 3 meetings & 3 club rounds. The club will then decide to vote you in as a member of Windansea Surf Club.
Thanks All Tez.

I am writing this email to say thanks to the members of Windansea who have been coming along to assist at the Disabled Surfers Association events that have been run over the last couple of months.
It is a wonderful reflection of the club and what it represents to the community. I would especially like to acknowledge the younger/teenage volunteers who are such good quality kids and add so much to the teams in the water. They (and their parents) should be really proud of themselves for being such genuine and considerate individuals.
Please pass this onto your members on behalf of our organisation.
Have a great week,
Sunshine Coast Disabled Surfers Association
