2023 Pa & Ma Bendall

Oney Onwar picked up the 2023 Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest digging deep to blast out an 8.5 in some of the smallest conditions in years. The Indonesian was on a tear and while his competitors were going big with some impressive aerials of their own, Oney stepped up and left no doubt who would be champion in 2023. With a waning swell waves were few and far between by the finals with a very small clean swell having competitors rock dodging at times to compete. At times there were some small clean lines with the offshore conditions and higher tides but others had to dig deep to find the scores. The standard of surfing never deteriorated and competitors managed to innovate and find pockets all weekend.

Windansea Boardriders again had a very successful event with Cam McDougall finishing 2nd in the open mens same as the previous year, but he put up one hell of a fight.

The Open Womens Final saw a clinical display of high performance surfing by all competitors with Coco Cairns emerging the 2023 champion. The talented pool of top level surfers demonstrated the quality of modern day womens surfing with Coco blitzing a 7.03 in the dying moments of the heat to edge out her competition and claim the 2023 title. Congratulations Coco Cairns.

2022 Pa & Ma Bendall

Congratulations Jagger Bartholomew for taking out the 2022 Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest with some impressive progressive surfing. Conditions were consistent all weekend with an overhead east swell generating consistent swell lines throughout the event and lighter southerly winds setting a great platform for innovative surfing all weekend. The consistent waves kept the standard of surfing to a very high level and generated scoring opportunities for all surfers. The Bartholomew family become the first father and son win in the events history with Rabbit winning the trophy 45 years ago in 1977. Well surfed and well deserved.

Windansea Boardriders had a very successful event with Cam McDougall finishing 2nd in the open mens. Our very own president Tezza Landsberg won the Legends division with Brett Hodge 2nd and Bruce Dunne 4th. David Scard was stoked with the win in masters after many 2nd places over the years and Tim Bange ripped his way into 2nd place in the Junior Boys. A great result for the club.

Another congratulations is in order for Sophie McCulloch for another win taking out the 2022 Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Competition. Sophie’s achievement this year cannot be overstated as the level of surfing by her competitors this year really went up another level. Sophie put in a notable performance with the highest heat total in all 3 rounds being 16.77, 15.9 and 15.77 in the final. It was an awesome display of speed, power and flow by all. The women’s divisions were well represented in 2022 with strong interest generating a new division for Junior Girls to add to the Cadet Girls and Open Women’s divisions. The Cadet & Junior girls surfed exceptionally well, and are on their way to becoming future Pa & Ma champions.

2021 Pa & Ma Bendall

Well done to Curtis Ewing from Point Lookout Boardiders for his win in the 2021 Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest. Contested in a growing east swell under tricky conditions, contestants did well all weekend to generate some stunning surfing throughout alll divisions. The open mens final was a showcase of progressive surfing with some of the best power surfing seen in the event. Curtis took the lead early demolishing a large set with at least half a dozen hooks and just when it seemed an unbeatable tally Zane Jenner pulled out a 2 turn combo on one of the biggest sets seen that left nothing on the table. The 8.67 pulled up just short of the required score and a releived Curtis celebrated a hard fought and well deserved win.

The Opens Womens division never fails to deliver and this year the standard of surfing was once again elevated beyond beleif. In the tricky conditions all competitors managed to find good scoring rides deliver a nailbiting final with World Surf League Qualifying Series competitor Sophie McCulloch finishing on top of the leaderboard on the final siren. Always a crowd favorite in the large surf condition the womens category never fails to deliver. Well done Sophie and congratulations to all the womens competitors for proviing such a spectacle of progressive surfing once again.

2020 Pa & Ma Bendall

Cancelled Due to COVID 19 – The first time ever that the comp didn’t run for a lack of surf.

Merchandise was printed for the event but the cancellation occurred prior to the sponsors logos being finalised and printed on the back of the shirts. The cleanskin shirts were then sold as a limited edition without sponsors for a donation to the fundraiser for the clubhouse court case that was occurring at the time. These shirts are the only Pa & Ma Merchandise to be sold without sponsors logos as a keepsake for supporters of the club. In 2021 the shirts were printed with sponsors and the text “now 47th 2021” added next to the 46th Anniversary text. A sweet reminder of an extraordinary year.
