Congratulations to our two newly appointed Life Members of Windansea – Serena Brooke & Laurie Jarman. Both club members have achieved success at the top levels of surfing albeit in different era’s and both continue to contribute to the surfing community today. They are both well deserving of the recognition and the club is honoured to have such passionate members among us.
Laurie Jarman is a foundation committee member and past President, Secretary, Registrar and Contest Organiser in the 1970’s and still actively involved in the club today. He has many achievements including forming the Sunshine Coast Surfriders Association, organising the first 2 Pa Bendall Memorials, helping start Freefluid Surfboards (the famous decal was designed by Laurie) as well as countless hours of mentoring grommets like Darryl Parkinson and Gary O’Donnell.
Serena Brooke blitzed the club competitions and in 1990 won the Queensland and Australian Amateur National Title. In 1995 Serena entered the pro ranks and took out Rookie of the Year and won the Billabong Pro Australia achieving a temporary #1 in the overall rankings. Serena twice achieved #2 in the World Championship Tour which is a remarkable achievement. Serena continued to excel moving on to do charity work, appear in surf fitness how-tos, start her own clothes company, give birth to twin girls and continues to mentor young surfers in various coaching programs on the coast.
The two new life members may be from different eras but as you an see they both share many similarities in their sustained comitment to the sport, their achievments and their readiness to give back to others. These two are well deserving of their life membership and Windansea is honoured to have members like these in our club.
